Pulling Down the Barn eloquently recalls author Anne-Marie Oomen´s personal journey as she discovers herself an outsider on her family farm located in western Michigan´s Oceana County, in the township of Elbridge - a couple hundred acres in the middle of rural America. Written as a series of heartfelt interlocking narratives, this collection of essays portrays the realities of farm life: haying, picking asparagus and cherries, the machinery of tractors and pickers; but each chapter also touches upon the more ethereal and rarely articulated: the stoic love that permeates a family, the farmer´s struggle with identity, and the way land can shape a childhood. With its rich language and style, Pulling Down the Barn engrosses the listener in Oomen´s memories - setting beauty and wonder against work and loss - and paints a poignant portrait of growing up in rural Michigan. Lake Pictures is a series of photographs of Lake Huron, one of the Great Lakes bordering the state of Michigan. The picture -taken at the same place, during the four seasons, and at different times of day and night-explore the changing atmospheric nature of the lake through the prisms of water, sky, color, light, place, space and time. Looking at this immense body of water and the sky above, both initially seem boundless, as if stretching forever into the distance. Only the fine horizon line between the two separates and joins them, pulling us into each photo and reminding us that this sense of infinity is but an intriguing optical fiction.
Career criminal Brady Ross has a problem. He´s fallen in love with the wrong woman, a nurse from the straight world named Mary Carson. Brady´s friends have warned him that he can´t have a foot in both worlds. They´ve told him that he´s either in the life all the way or must walk the straight and narrow, but Brady is determined to prove them wrong, as he hides his true self from Mary while still pulling heists. Meanwhile, while giving care to the man´s dying wife, Mary has developed a friendship with Clay Richards, the local Chief of Police of Destination, Vermont, a town also known as Desolation to the locals, because the lake that once attracted visitors and prosperity dried up decades earlier. After a robbery doesn´t go as planned, Brady and his gang seek refuge in Desolation Lake, and Brady´s two worlds collide, leaving him to choose between the woman he loves, or the lure of easy money. 1. Anne-Marie Oomen uses a wealth of vivid language and personal details to bring scenes from her childhood on a family farm to life in House of Fields. Yet the focus of this book shifts away from the daily activities of the farm, which Oomen presented in Pulling Down the Barn, to life outside its boundaries, as she explores the complex meaning of ´´education´´ in all of its rural forms. Oomen´s description of the farmhouse where she grew up becomes the central image for this collection of essays. Within this context, Oomen examines memories from her formal education, which began during the final years of the one-room school era then shifted to the ´´consolidated´´ schools of the late 1950s and 1960s and to a parochial school system. Struggles with reading, first friendships, early loves, and contradictory educational models are coupled with the challenges of coming of age and the ups and downs of an emotional education between mother and daughter. If I´d blinked, I would have missed it. But I didn´t, and I saw something fall from the rear deck of the opposite ferry: a small, wide-eyed human face, in one tiny frozen moment, as it plummeted toward the water. When she witnesses a small child tumbling from a ferry into Lake Champlain, Troy Chance dives in without thinking. Harrowing moments later, she bobs to the surface, pulling a terrified little boy with her. As the ferry disappears into the distance, she begins a bone-chilling swim nearly a mile to shore towing a tiny passenger. Surprisingly, he speaks only French. He´ll acknowledge that his name is Paul; otherwise, he´s resolutely mute. Troy assumes that Paul´s frantic parents will be in touch with the police or the press. But what follows is a shocking and deafening silence. And Troy, a freelance writer, finds herself as fiercely determined to protect Paul as she is to find out what happened to him. She´ll need skill and courage to survive and protect her charge and herself. Sara J. Henry´s powerful and compelling Learning to Swim will move and disturb listeners right up to its shattering conclusion. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Suzanne Toren.
